Serving Him

On this day in 1980 Terrence Stanley Fox received the Companion of the Order of Canada. This is the highest award given to its citizens to “recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement and merit of the highest degree, especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large.” At age 22 he was the youngest person ever so invested. Having lost one leg to cancer his marathon run across Canada raised millions of dollars for cancer research. Sadly his run was terminated mid way along his course in August of 1981. Terry died of cancer seven months later. If a nation needs a sports hero to inspire the next generation, it needs to look no further than Terry Fox. Just ask Wayne Gretzky…
